Basic Campus Services
Communities In Schools provides professional social services to students who meet the statistical profile of being at risk of dropping out of school. We are located on 8 public school campuses serving students from pre-K through 12th grade
Services include the following
- Counseling and Supportive Guidance (individual, group, family and crisis counseling)
- Health and Human Services (referrals for basic needs, medical clinics, nutrition, prenatal education, WIC cards, community health fairs, Vision Van, Children Inc., Adopt A Family)
- Parental Involvement (home visits, family counseling, parenting classes)
- Pre-Employment/Employment (resume building, workforce training and development, computer skills, mentoring, math and science activities)
- Enrichment (field trips, celebrations, community festivals)
- Educational Enhancement (tutoring, homework clubs, mentoring, reading groups, book clubs)
Fulltime site coordinators housed on the school's campus work together with members of the school's student support services team to provide needed services based on a formal assessment. Referrals are received from school personnel, parents, and sometimes the student's themselves. The coordinated effort results in lower truancy which improves attendance and academic success.
Programming is funded by the school. Additional funding comes from donations from numerous adults representing themselves, their employers, their families, their clubs and their faith-based organizations. The common thread is that all care about the education and the success of our public school students in Orleans parish, especially as New Orleans experiences school reform in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
