AmeriCorps 2010-2011: Eliminating Roadblocks to School Success

We have filled our 20 AmeriCorps positions in our "Eliminating Roadblocks to School Success" National Direct AmeriCorps Program. Position Summaries: All members will be classified as “Community Resource Coordinators” and will assist the CIS Site Coordinator at the school campus with finding, connecting and managing community resources that will help students overcome barriers and improve their academic success. Specialized responsibilities include:

I. AmeriCorps Tutor and Mentor-
AmeriCorps members will contribute to Communities In Schools mission by functioning as full-time tutors, mentors and positive role models in New Orleans public schools. Members will work closely with the Site Coordinators to assist in monitoring and evaluating academic and behavioral progress in students

II. ScienceREACH AmeriCorps –
AmeriCorps member will assist the ScienceREACH Coordinator in growing a comprehensive program designed to encourage high school students to pursue post-secondary education or careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math. The ScienceREACH AmeriCorps member’s main role will be to tutor high school students in science and math.

Required Skills: College degree required. Strong interest in education, youth work, social services, or related fields. Ability to work well with diverse types of people. Eagerness to help disadvantaged young people improve academically and behaviorally; commitment to public service; strong leadership skills. Excellent communication skills. Ability to multitask and handle potentially stressful situations calmly and appropriately. Ability to work independently and with others. Energy and creativity in working with young people. Strong commitment to public service and social justice. Access to reliable transportation required. Teaching experience, college admissions knowledge, background in the STEM fields (if applying for ScienceREACH)are strongly desired.

Benefits: $13,000 total living stipend. At the completion of service, members receive a $5,350 education award that can be used toward qualified educational expenses for up to 7 years. Members are eligible for health and child care benefits (child care benefits subject to income guidelines).

ALL MEMBERS MUST SERVE 1700 HOURS (FULLTIME ) AND WILL SERVE FROM SEPTEMBER 1, 2010 UNTIL JULY 31, 2011.
