Make It Happen is excited to be partnering with Communities In Schools New Orleans. We have the opportunity to support this resilient community as it continues on the road back from the devastating aftermath of hurricane Katrina. The recent hurricanes again remind us of our need to act. The effort to rebuild the public schools in New Orleans has been daunting. For three years young people have been forced to attend 2, 3, even 4 different schools as the community struggled to rebuild. Now the schools are opening their doors and CIS has identified 440 deserving students (K-12) who need our help. Together we can make a life changing difference, one child at a time, by lending a small helping hand.

A donation of $18 can provide one hour of mentoring/tutoring for a student, fees for after school activities, or hygiene packs and a class on hygiene. Students are in need of clothing and $36 will help supply a uniform. At-risk students, who possess both the capability and motivation to go to college, may fall through the cracks without crucial mentoring and tutoring. Our donations will also go toward SAT and ACT exam fees, AP exam fees, SAT prep books and calculators to use during the math portion of these exams. Please give as generously as you can.

• Make It Happen Continues to Impact CIS Students in New OrleansAs students in CIS schools in New Orleans prepare for the summer break, the Make It Happen team continues to provide CIS staff with the tools it needs to help kids have access to the five basics. Donors to the fund have provided several hundred hours of tutoring for general academic assistance and for ACT test preparation, access to literacy services through assistance with the Reading Is Fundamental Books for Ownership Program, and basic needs with gifts of hygiene supplies.

  This summer, the fund will continue to fund the AmeriCorps members who are helping CIS to provide summer camp experiences for middle and high school students. CIS is partnering with Karr High School/Project Grad, University of New Orleans-Classic Upward Bound, MLKing, Jr. Charter School, and Brad Pitt's Make It Right Foundation to provide students great experiences in forensics, rocketry and GIS mapping. • Make It Happen Tops $6,800The Make It Happen team continues to support the youth of New Orleans through the solicitation of gifts that are used by Communities In Schools to tutor students, provide them ACT test preparation materials and tutoring, and more. Heading into the final two months of the 2008-09 academic year, the fund has grown to over $6,800!

• Alpha Phi Chapter at University of Michigan Joins the Make It Happen Initiative

  The Aplha Phi Sorority at the University of Michigan has joined in to Make It Happen. They have a separate fund. Click here to view the list of the initial donors to this fund!
