Volunteer
Communities In Schools New Orleans offers many opportunities for individuals or groups to volunteer their time to help kids succeed in school. Below is a sampling of opportunities:
ONGOING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
These opportunities are available to those volunteers that wish to serve on a regular basis. Our volunteers must be dedicated to their volunteer duties because our students depend on volunteers to show up.
There are many students in all of our schools that need to be tutored. Students range from grades K-12 and subjects vary. Tutors usually meet once or twice a week with a student or small group of students to tutor. Please click for more details.
Participants in ScienceREACH improve their interest and success in pursuing careers in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields. Participants gain significant exposure to numerous career fields they might otherwise not have considered.
Some of the classes in our schools are large and it is difficult for teachers to give enough attention to every student. With the help of a classroom assistant, teachers can become more effective at teaching and making sure that everyone understands the concepts that are being taught.
ONE-TIME VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
RIF Book Distributions are great events for volunteers that cannot commit on a weekly basis. We have these events throughout the school year at our various schools. Volunteers are instantly rewarded for their services by the big smiles on the students' faces when they receive brand new books to take home.
These are special one-day events that schools host. There are usually various stations for the students to visit that have activities and food. Volunteers are needed to help man the stations, so teachers can attend to their classes.
- Job Shadow
Sponsor a Job Shadow Day at your work site. This experience allows young people to get first-hand experiences about various career opportunities. CIS can provide support for planning and implementing the activity.
