On Wednesday, September 28th, Eisenhower Academy in conjunction with Communities In Schools of Greater New Orleans hosted students and their families to participate in the first Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) book distribution and Family Literacy Night of the school year. Eisenhower’s teachers and staff created a festive feel by dressing up as their favorite storybook characters, entertaining the excited students as they traveled from classroom to classroom completing fun literacy activities and listening to stories read by their teachers. Each time a student participated in an activity, they were given a stamp in their literacy passport. The final stop in the journey was the RIF distribution room, where each child picked one book to bring home as part of the Books for Ownership program. Before they began their activities, everyone was treated to a dinner that they could enjoy with their family. Special thanks to Eisenhower’s faculty and staff and Communities In Schools Site Coordinator, Shayne Latter, for making the event such a success!
