CIS Greater New Orleans staff and AmeriCorps at Batiste Cultural Arts Academy helped to kick of the 1st Annual Family Math Night, which had 200 attendees! Families dined on yummy pulled pork and buttery grits from Squeal BBQ, smothered chicken from Café Reconcile, and jambalaya from ReNEW CEO Gary Robichaux’s kitchen. The infamous CIS AmeriCorps, Ms. Keeton (aka Math Wizard) made delicious homemade pies. She would like to thank her math apprentice, 6th grader Kyle Deyarmett. Every PK-5th grader received a free book from Reading is Fundamental (RIF). Activities included a family reading room, hula hoop contest, math bingo, face painting, jelly bean estimation, shapes Twister, and pattern-making. “[6th grader] Tyrese Matthews showed extreme focus in the math bingo room” reports CIS AmeriCorps, Mr. McGauvran. Mr. Lawrence, another CIS AmeriCorps, spotted 7th grader Devaugn Staes reading with his sister, 3rd grader DeQueen Staes, in the family reading room. Kids earned tickets at each activity to spend at the prize booth, run by a CIS AmeriCorps, Mr. Bardwell, and 6th grader Rory Jasper. “Rory was running the popcorn machine like CP3 runs the court,” says Bardwell. All parents, school staff and students had a wonderful time. They hope to see everyone at next year’s event!
